Quicktime VR

After my last post, I started wondering how people made those Quicktime VR movies. I found a couple utilities, but they all required Mac OS 9. I’ve got Mac OS X, and don’t have the classic support turned on (or what ever they call it officially). Anyway I came across Apple’s Quicktime tools page, and found the program that does it in OS X. It’s called QTVR Make Cubic. Sorry Windows folks, this is a Mac only program.

Any way here is a Quicktime VR movie of my cubical. Click and drag your mouse on the image. To zoom in and out use the shift and ctrl keys. Click Here to view.

My Slice of Heaven

Ever wonder what my cubical looks like? Well now you can know, thanks to my co-worker Byron. He built a 360 degree tripod head for his Nikon D50. We used it to take a 360 degree picture of my cubical at work. The picture is to large to embed in this post so you’ll have to click on these links to see it:

Small Version
Medium Version
Full Resolution Version

The pillar on the far right and left of the picture is actually the same pillar. You can see the Hitman and Call of Duty posters on both.

I think these turned out pretty cool. Byron also took some of our datacenter, his garage, and some other co-workers cubicals.

If you want to build your own, you can find the plans at:

We took a picture every 10 degrees. I then ran the pictures through a program called “AutoStich.” It is what puts all of the photos together into one large panoramic picture. The program is free and can be downloaded at:

Large Talons?

A little over a year ago, WVU retired Jerry West’s number 44. There was a big ceremony at last season’s WVU vs LSU game. He came to the game and was honored at half time. At the time he was the general manager for the NBA team The Grizzlies. The owner of The Grizzlies donated money to WVU to have a bronze statue of Jerry made.

Well the statue is finally finished. It was put into place last week, and dedicated at the WVU vs Seton Hall game this weekend.

I heard it was in place on Thursday. So after work I told Treah I wanted to go take pictures of it. I even asked her to take a picture of me with the statue. If you know me well, you know what a quantum leap that is.

Anyway, I must say that the statue looks great. The artist went into great detail. He even shows the warn down treads on the soles of Jerry’s shoes.

When we got home I downloaded this pictures. This one stood out to me.

I couldn’t believe how long his fingers were. I showed it to Treah, and in my best Napoleon Dynamite voice asked, “Does Jerry West have large talons?” She laughed and told me not to blog about that. So here I am. Enjoy the talons picture.

You can view all of the pictures we took over on my gallery page:

My kind of mower

mower.jpg

I think my least favorite thing to do in the world is mow the lawn. Apparently I’m not the only one. I came across this page detailing how to make your own remote controlled lawn mower. This would be great!

Maybe this will be my spring project, converting my mower into an RC mower. Think of how freaked out Vandy would be. I wonder if it could handle the hills in my yard.

A project with this kind of disclaimer sounds like my kind of project:

DISCLAIMER - THE METHODS OF CONTROLLING AN UNMANNED VEHICLE DETAILED BELOW ARE POTENTIALLY LETHAL. YOU CAN KILL SOMEONE, AN ANIMAL OR A ROSE GARDEN IF YOU ARE NOT CAREFUL. I ACCEPT NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR LOSS OF LIFE, BEER PRIVILEGES OR SEX FOR CONSEQUENCES THAT ARE BEYOND MY CONTROL. IF YOU DECIDE TO BUILD A MOWER LIKE MINE YOU DO SO AT YOUR OWN RISK. BY BUILDING THE PROJECTS STATED BELOW YOU ARE ACKNOWLEDGING THAT IT IS ONLY YOUR FAULT IF SOMETHING GOES WRONG.

Here’s a youtube video of it in action:

WVU Wins!

Well WVU did it again. We knocked off UCLA. This is the the 2nd time in a row. UCLA came into the coliseum yesterday ranked #2 in the country. This was the 4th time WVU and UCLA has played. WVU leads the series 3-1. I have a feeling we won’t be playing UCLA again anytime soon.

Anyway, In the above picture can you find the hidden Mountaineer? I’ll give you a clue. Joe Mazzulla is in there some where.
